Protein Açaí Bowl
If you love smoothies and açaí bowls this recipe is PERFECT for you. I used to try to force myself to have a protein shake every morning. I would always opt for the option that gave me the MOST protein for the LEAST amount of calories. My thought process was that if the shake was high enough in protein, it wouldn’t matter that it didn’t have a lot of calories - it would still keep me full.
Right??
Wrong!
Those 150-200 calorie shakes NEVER kept me full, even with the 30g of protein they contained.
Because I was never satiated with the shakes, I gave up on making them for a while. It wasn’t until this year when I tried an açaí bowl for the first time (shoutout to my best friend Sara for the introduction) that I considered making the shakes again. But then I thought - instead of making a shake that I slurp down in 2 minutes and end up feeling unsatisfied, maybe I try to make a BOWL instead? And why not instead of making it as low calorie as I can, I make it as nutrient dense and filling as I can?
Well I did just that and let me tell you - this bowl is delicious AND it actually keeps me full. If you like açaí bowls you will LOVE this. Let’s get into the details!
Ingredients:
1/2 packet frozen açaí (or hand-full of frozen black raspberries)
hand-full of frozen blueberries
hand-full of frozen strawberries
1 medium frozen banana
1/2 cup skim milk or almond milk
1 scoop choice chocolate protein powder (I recommend MusclePharm Chocolate Milk flavor)
3-5 ice cubes
Steps:
1) Blend all these goodies up in the blender
2) Pour into a bowl and pop in the freezer for 15-20 minutes - this gives it more of an “açaí bowl” consistency rather than a “smoothie” consistency.
3) Top with 2 HEAPING tablespoons of your favorite nut butter. I prefer chunky almond butter. The addition of the nut butter is KEY - I think the extra calories are what make this bowl so filling and tasty :)
This bowl has become a staple for me! It’s packed with protein and because it is a bowl that I actually have to slow down to eat and because it is so nutrient-dense it keeps me full for hours. I hope you enjoy!
